Drawing Cute Cake

No matter how you slice it, cute foods with faces are adorable! You can use these step-by-step instructions to get started with a sweet slice of cake. These characters are so addicting and fast to make that you may decide to make a whole cake's worth. Play with expressions, colors, and toppings to make a sweet cake character that is uniquely yours, and never forget to have fun!

How to Draw Cake Step One

How to Draw Cake Step One

1. Basic Cake Slice Shape

The key to drawing is starting with the large simple shapes. Draw a basic pie-slice shape (or cake slice, in this case!). Remember that the back should be curved; most cakes are round, after all! In fact, don't worry about making super-straight lines in general. It adds more character to have those curves. We will build on this simple shape.

2. Add Frosting

Drawing a line just below the top of the cake makes it look like there is a layer of frosting. Make it turn the corner just before the edge of the cake to make a layer of frosting on the outside of the cake as well. I put in a middle layer of frosting because I think layer cakes are inherently cuter. You can add as many layers as you like!

3. Add Icing

Little piping details are a simple and very cute way to dress up your cake. Sketch little ellipses along the back edge and don't worry about making them identical; having them roughly the same size is good enough. Personally, I wouldn't spend longer drawing them evenly than I would spend piping them on a real cake!

4. Top With a Cherry

A maraschino cherry adds a fun touch! Draw a circle with a stem. I put a little knobby thing on the top of my stem.

5. Clean Up the Edges

The best thing about drawing cake is that it's a lot less messy than baking a real one. All the same, it's time to clean up the sketch lines behind the piping and the cherry.

You can see it starting to come together!

6. Add a Happy Face

It's time to draw the face! I chose a very happy face. A cake slice like this would probably have a 24/7 sugar high, so I wanted to draw a very ecstatic expression.

7. Color the Lines

I decided I wanted colored lines, so I chose the colors I wanted and did so. You might also notice that I changed the lines a little bit. I made the layers look more separate by making them curve in toward the frosting and generally softened a few of the corners to make it look more like cake and less like a block of wood.

8. Fill It In

This step is pretty simple: Choose a lighter shade of the lines and fill in the cake slice!

9. Shade the Cake Slice

Add just enough shading to give the picture a little depth. The simpler the shading, the cuter the character. I put a dot of reflected light on the bottom of the cherry just to make it look shinier.

10. Add Final Details

I made a few tweaks to the cake to bring it to life!

  • Blush for the cake slice
  • Bright yellow shine to the cherry
  • Speck of light in the eyes
  • Dots on the cake for texture and liveliness
  • Highlight around the mouth

It's little details that really make a big difference. Congratulations, you've finished your cute cake character! Now that you know the process, why not draw it some friends? There's no end to the combinations of flavors, frostings, and toppings you can use to decorate your cake.
